Math - Subtraction

This week, we will be learning about early subtraction skills. We are using word problems like:

If you have 6 balloons and 3 of them pop, how many do you have left?

Remind your children that there are 3 ways for them to solve this problem:
1. Use counters or objects to act it out.
2. Use drawings to show the actions.
3. Think of it as an addition problem i.e. - 3 + ___ = 6.

Let me know if you need any other ideas - I will be sending home math homework this week to accompany our spelling homework. This should help our kiddos get some extra practice with addition and subtraction.

Upcoming Dates:
Spelling Test - Friday Sept. 30
Triple R Reading Club - 8:00 am - for a free book & breakfast, join us in the library - Friday Sept. 30
NO SCHOOL - Teacher Inservice - Friday Oct. 7

Have a great week!

Welcome Families!

Welcome to all of our First Grade Families! I can hardly believe that we are 7 weeks into our school year already. We have had so much fun already working on reading, writing and math skills.

Here's what's going on in Math:

-We have spent the last week exploring early addition - using sums up to 20.
-We have practiced writing our own addition sentences and finding the sums for them.
-We have worked on comparing numbers to see which numbers are larger and smaller (greater and less than).
-We have spent time putting numbers in order and looking at their relationships.

Other math skills that we are practicing include - calendar time, counting by 10's, 2's, and 5's, tally marks, patterns, counting by 1's to 110, reviewing the days of the week and months of the year and quickly recognizing numbers in a set.

In literacy, we have introduced many sight words, practice reading at our own levels and with each other as a whole group. We have learned about punctuation and capitalization at the beginning of sentences. We have been practicing writing our own stories, working towards 2-3 sentences at a time. Our spelling tests are going well so far - keep practicing those words each week as you see them come home in the G.O. - Getting Organized books. I will try to update our spelling lists on here as well.

Upcoming Dates:
October 7 - No School - Teacher Inservice
October 17-21 - Fall Break - No School

Thank you for supporting your child's education - your support and encouragement is essential to their success!
